Polaris: Equity Research

Polaris is a structured online training program consisting of masterclass and industry project.

The masterclass is conducted by seasoned senior associate from SGX, as well as an experienced senior analyst from Putnam Investments, so that you will learn essential equity research skills.

The industry project is a collaboration between TalentLink and Springboard, a leading equity research firm. You are required to apply the financial modeling and equity research knowledge to solve the project.

Syllabus

Polaris comprises of recorded video courses, live Q&A sessions, and weekly project tasks, and all of these are taking place online. The video courses are pre-recorded and are split into bit-size clips according to curriculum. Weekly project tasks are also assigned weekly and students are required to complete the task within that week. Live Q&A sessions will be organized to enable students to ask questions.

Phase 1

The first phase is about building up technical knowledge. It has a hybrid learning schedule where pre-recorded video and live sessions will be arranged to answer any problems encountered. You may follow your own schedules but you have to finish all the course materials before deadline. After completing the first phase, students are required to pass the assessment so as to move on to the next phase.

You will be given a name of stock to work on and your model submission should not be based on the CordLife financials used in the online course.

Week 1

Briefing of the entire modelling course. What you should take note of.

Accounting 101 which will explain to you basic concepts of financial statements.
Learn how to consolidate historical number into a more standardized financial statement.
Learn how to extract raw financial data from annual reports.

Deliverable: Have a good idea of how the reported financials numbers are consolidated and extract the raw data for the past 4 financial years from annual reports.

Learn the formatting of a financial model and calculate the key financial ratios for the company.

Deliverable: Make your financial model with forecast. You are likely not getting a balanced model here.

Project Details

JXR (ticker 1951 HK) is a leading IVF provider in China and is expanding its business overseas. In this project, you are required to build a financial model and write a brief report on the company. You need to learn and apply the skills of financial modelling by building an integrated financial model. In the brief note, you shall discuss the growth driver of the company, dynamics of the industry, whether you like the company, and the fair value of the company.
